Good news for the transport sector. While UK unemployment figures published this week reveal an increase to almost 2.5 million in the quarter to November 2010, last month’s vacancies in the transport sector showed year-on-year increased opportunities in almost every category.
The results released by Skills for Logistics (SfL), the Sector Skills Council for the UK's freight logistics industries, show that HGV driver vacancies last month were more than double those of last year, at 11,341, compared with just 5,432 in 2010 – an increase of almost 110%.
January vacancies for van drivers increased from 3,645 in January 2010 to 5,288 this year (up 45%) and the general category of transport operatives was up from 198 to 392 (up 97%).
Overall, vacancies in transport occupations rose from 19,774 in January 2010 to 31,510 last month – an increase of almost 60%.
